Topic : Reaction to the Bronx mom of last month

Earlier this summer, the Bronx mom of a boy with autism killed him and then herself. Most of us can probably guess at her state of mind when she did this. My questions are regarding the reader reactions to this story; they villified her, damning her to hell even while praying her son went to heaven. Did she deserve better judgement? Is this kind of reaction from the readers just typical of how the world in general still doesn't understand what we as parents go through?

I totally agree with mainstreaming was well. Always trying to foster independence for my students. It helps to have a teacher that will take ownership of the self contained students and not rely on the aide for mainstreaming.

I too agree with mainstreaming, one reason being it's mainstreaming for both sides. The "typical" students get introduced to a population it will only benefit them to know, and perhaps also find a vocation early.

I definitely agree with mainstreaming.... if the child is able to not cause a big distraction to other students or the teacher. It is so important that children be as much of the learning process environment. Having a co teach in the classroom is essential. this also is good for peer socialization as well. speaking from experience only. My daughter is 15 and we have been working with this since she was 5 years old. I have so many comments I could fill up the entire page:-) hope this helps.

I am a special education teacher who works in a self contained classroom of students with developmental disabilities.  I frequently mainstream students into typical classes for social and academic purposes.  As a mainstream teacher, do you have any suggestions.  Do you agree with mainstreaming.
